Puzzle situation

Someone collapsed in a restaurant. A man at the next table rushed over, dropped to his knees, and began CPR, shouting for someone to call an ambulance. He pressed for eight full minutes, sweat dripping from his forehead. By the time paramedics arrived, it was too late. He crouched in the corner wiping his eyes while a waitress brought him hot water. The dead man's wife held his hand and said: thank you, you did everything you could.
